Tell us about Jeanne Sparrow and Fearless Authenticity.

I’ve been in the media for over three decades. I’ve worked in television, radio, podcasts, consulting and wrote a book on Fearless Authenticity.

I love people, and I love helping them tell their stories. Fearless Authenticity stems from the belief that who we are is a unique gift to the world, and success comes from embracing our authentic selves. People have trouble understanding where they fit in the world, and we often fight with the gifts and talents we are given when there’s an easier path right in front of us.

What challenges have you had to navigate as a business owner?

I started my business because of my own personal challenge. A morning show I was working on was canceled, and although it happens all the time in that world, it felt incredibly unfair at the time. I had already been planning my exit from the show and had clients lined up, so although I was upset, my financial planner reminded me it was an opportunity.

He said, “God keeps opening windows for you, and you peek your head out and come back in. So this time, He opened a door and shoved you out because clearly, that was the only way you were going to take the opportunity you were being given.” And he was right!

The new challenges I face are adapting my business to the ever-changing world. I incorporated in 2017 and every year since then, I’ve had to shift and adapt my plans for my business.

How would you apply Fearless Authenticity to financial insights?

At its core, Fearless Authenticity is about understanding both your strengths and the things you have no business doing.

People, especially entrepreneurs, think they have to pay their dues to do what they want. We force and punish ourselves because we think it is what being a business owner means. And we think we should be able to do all the things. But we need to eradicate the word “should” from our vocabularies. It’s my least favorite word. I’ve had my struggles in managing business finances with that mindset. I felt like I should have been able to handle the bookkeeping.

But, if a particular aspect, like financial management, isn’t your strong suit, hand it off to someone else. If QuickBooks isn’t your jam, hire someone else to do it. This approach allows you to focus on what you do best and stop wasting good energy that could be poured into the parts of your business that you thrive in. When you are fearlessly authentic, you save space for your strengths and stop forcing yourself to do things outside of your power.

From the beginning of my career, my grandmother told me, “You’ve got to be able to see your money.” Although she didn’t even have a high school education, she ran her household, and she managed the money. She knew you have to know what’s coming in and going out.
